abstract airlines

http://poemiksabstrakcyjny.webpark.pl/abstractairlines

well, this is not a strip, and it has no words in it - even though poemics usually have words or at least letters in them :), and even though we concentrate on strips, at least for a moment.

this approach to poemics is a little bit different, I don't know if it's acceptable. in my oppinion these works could be seen as abstract comics, visual poetry, or both. and the "both" part could be sometimes called poemics (perhaps abstract poemics), at least when there are elements of poetry and comics present. so we have word baloons and panels from comics and parts that resemble poetry (poem structure, asemic writing).

"abstract airlines" is the first part of "bezsensu" - which in Polish means "no meaning" - well, the word "nonsens" in Polish or "nonsense" in English, but the meaning seems slightly different :). I'll try to continue the series.

poemic strip anthology

wow, thing've been happening round here! we got comments, Satu began creating poemics (I've added the "links" section), Dick Whyte expressed his interest in the idea, I think it's time to gather us around a particular goal, which would be the poemic strip anthology :)

I told some of you already about the concept of publishing a small zine-type of a brochure and distributing it around (the authors would get copies and they would give it to nice and smart people around them :) . we could also promote the anthology - if it happens to be interesting - in other media or anyway we want and can). as the brochure (A5 size, and the strips should go horizontally) will be placed on the net in .pdf file, so anyone can print it out and have a copy as well.

the anthology is planned to be black-and-white, but if someone can print it in colour, it's even better. and the .pdf file can be helpful in showing the works in full colour.

the deadline is the end of december 2009. is that ok? language of the anthology: english (but if you write concrete poetry or if you use letters the way where natural language is less important - it's also fine). please send the poemics to the anthology to pszren(at)wp(dot)pl as files that can be printed. please sign every poemic (there will be no "contents" section) and include a short info about yourself. also please give me your address in the email, so that I can send you the brochure.

this is not a professional project, so don't expect too much. which doesn't mean we should keep standards low.

to be or not to be

simple form, playing with words and letters

this is just a simple example - words can be used in many ways when you create poemic strips.

or you can make it more abstract, use letters graphically, draw shapes with words or letters from different languages or just use forms known from concrete poetry and put them into comic panels. by the way, this poemic, "smog cloud", was inspired by Mike Getsiv's cloudpiece.

simple poemic strip form

before experimenting with the form of a poemic strip, it is probably best to master its simple form. just like in a comic strip, we can have some panels, going vertically or horizontaly, and just like in poetry, we have some words inside.

we know that poetry is not just words, and that a comic strip doesn't have to consist of panels that are all equal in size, so let's try to modify some elements, just a little bit (but not leaving the form of a poemic strip).

poemics - the art between poetry and comics

one poemic, two poemics... so poemics is an art between poetry and comics. what does it mean? is there a need for such an art? well, there are many kinds of arts out there, some are really well known and make people famous, and some are only practiced by a little group, by one person or even by none. I hope poemics will have some future, and that there will be albums, exhibitions and other forms full of poemics. It would be nice to think and write a lot about the theory, but I guess it is even more important to create poemics. so let me invite you to the poemics project, let's do it!
