Someone once said (or wrote) that imitation is the greatest form of flattery.  Teaching from ancient times to today often involves some exercise of copying, of imitation.  Call that performative pedagogy: learning by doing, understanding someone by trying on their style.  So, what would it be like to make poemics in the style of someone else?

Since poemics is a hybrid art, your imitation might pull from a noteworthy poet or comics artist (An Emily Dickenson poemic or a Carmen Infantino poemic, etc.).  Or, if you are really daring, what would it mean to try doing someone's poemics style from this website or from others who do poemics?  

Remember to post your work and somehow mark that it is following the PI prompt.  Feel free to note who you are imitating or leave it up to us to guess. Fun either way, I think.  Also, feel free to accompany the work with any commentary about what you learned from the exercise of imitation.

Finally, please enter this exercise with a kind heart and a willingness to explore.  Developing a distinctive and personal "voice" or "style" is somewhat central to poetry, comics, and poemics. This PI is not intended as an exercise in critique through parody or ripping someone off.

the Lublin meetings with comics (Lubelskie Spotkania z Komiksem) is not over yet, but as my lecture (25 minutes long) was held today, I am writing the message now. I talked about comics and poemics - and "poemic strip anthology" seemed to have made the biggest impression on the viewers. I've also shown my albums, such as "abstract airlines" and "paski poemiksowe" - generally the people liked (or at least didn't show they didn't like) all of the poemics.

there were some pictures taken, if I get them, I'll post them here.

I think it was a success, the people liked it. some of them were students, but most of them were comics fans, from Lublin and elsewhere in Poland.

perhaps we should think about how to create "big things", I mean new projects that can be shown to the public :)

Poemic Inquiry: Mechanisms of Vision

First, sorry for being away for so long.  The last month has been one long exercise in overcommitment on my part, with much in the way of travels and other obligations on my time.  The graphics pad is gathering dust, and that makes me really really sad.

But enough about me.  On to another Poemics Inquiry for us to consider.  In my effort to oscillate between the poetic end of the hybrid form and the visual/comics end of poemics, I thought it was time to play with the visual.  And in this case, I'd like to "go meta."  By meta, I mean some sort of reflection on our own artistic practice by means of our art.  Principally, how might poemics deal with mechanisms of vision.  Several ways to take this, I think.  How might poemic image-work incorporate visual technologies, from cameras to eyeglasses?  How might poemics address the mechanism of their own artistic production, from graphics pads to paintbrushes? And perhaps more abstractly, how might poemics reflect on their own use of the visual as trope, as device, or as thematic? 

I haven't done a round-up for the last few Poemic Inquiries.  I have a plan, though (does that make me a Cylon?).  So please, contribute here and mark your work if it is playing with the PI theme.  If you are not a contributor here, but you are inspired by the PI prompt, please post a link to your work in the comments section below.  

Let's let this PI take us through the end of April and then I will (a) post another PI and (b) follow through on my mystery idea for a round up.  And seriously, I am back.  My travels are done for a while and, except for the usual end-of-semester obligations, I think I get my arty, Internet-ty life back.  Whew!  About time!

Poemic Inquiry -- Taking time to work with rhyme

First, apologies for my hiatus from this blog.  A trip away from my computer followed by a return to both an excessive amount of work and a downed computer has limited my internet participation.  There's only so much one can do with an iPhone.

Fortunately, saniismail's invitation to collaborate with "Exit" seems to have filled the gap.  And happily, our contributors here prove time and again that they can produce amazing poemic work with no prompt whatsoever. 

Since I am back (sorta), I thought I would pose another question for Poemic Inquiry.  Since our last inquiry on sound effects was more oriented toward the comics end of the hybrid form, I thought this time we could investigate a something on the poetry end.  Namely, how might poemics deal with rhyme?  Even though contemporary poetry tends to embrace free-verse and avoid rhyme, rhyming words have a rich tradition in poetry and play a central role in popular "spoken word" forms of poetry performance.  Is there such a thing as visual rhyming?  Is rhyme only a linguistic concept? 

As with past PI's, feel free to contribute your work here or link in the comments section to another site that showcases work addressing this topic. 

(Side note:  I haven't pulled together a linked compendium of the last Poemic Inquiry on sound effects yet.  Is that sort of post useful?  Or do you think the blog archive does that well enough without those compendium posts?)

hello, I would like to ask you, if anyone would still like to participate in the poemic Xerolage issue? I've gathered 21 pieces so far, and we need 24. would someone be interested in sending 3 poemics with speech balloons (8,5 inches width, 11 inches height, high resolution, and a bio as well as a photo)? please! I've made 6 already, so it would be better, if someone else makes the missing pieces.
